Introduction

Welcome to LIP-Learning, where we are dedicated to empowering refugees living in Japan to become self-reliant through our comprehensive employment support program.

At Living in Peace(LIP), we understand the challenges refugees face, and our mission is to provide them with the necessary skills and language proficiency to thrive in Japan.

What is LIP-Learning?

This programme provides refugees living in Japan with various learning opportunities needed for employment and to improve their living conditions. We believe that by focusing on skills acquisition and learning, we can help refugees successfully integrate into Japanese society.

Refugees in Japan face numerous challenges, including the physical and psychological damage caused by past persecution, limited financial resources, and uncertainty about their future.

As a result, many are focused on day-to-day survival, making it difficult for them to plan for a stable and sustainable career in the medium to long term.

We identified that acquiring the necessary skills and language proficiency for employment is crucial to achieve the well-being of each refugee and help them realize their desired career and independent living in Japan.

LIP-Learning aims to help refugees integrate into society by providing opportunities to focus on skills acquisition and learning.

Online Japanese language learning support

We offer opportunities for Japanese language learning, which is essential for employment and daily life. Over the years, we have supported approximately 20 scholarship recipients annually

Challenges: The Hurdles Faced by Refugees

Language is widely recognized to be the primary barrier to social participation for refugees.

One of the primary barriers refugees face in Japan is language. Communication is essential for social participation and day-to-day life, but the Japanese language can be challenging to learn.

In some cases, the inability to speak Japanese makes it challenging to engage with schools and the community, leading to social isolation and hindrance in daily life.

Another challenge is that many Japanese companies typically require a Japanese Language Proficiency Test’s (JLPT) score of N2 or above for employment (especially for full-time employment, known as career-track positions) Applicants without these qualifications often face rejection in the application screening process.

Refugees living in Japan possess valuable skills and aspirations, yet the Japanese language often acts as a barrier preventing them from pursuing their desired careers.

Why Living in Peace provides support

Learning a new language, like English, is not an overnight process, as many Japanese have also experienced.

For refugees and others, acquiring Japanese language proficiency and fully integrating into society is a process that takes time.

We aim to provide ongoing support for refugees’ Japanese language learning, offering them a system that accompanies them throughout this long process.

We also recognize that refugees and those seeking assistance are not limited to Tokyo; many people live and work in various parts of Japan.

To ensure equal opportunities for Japanese language learning, we have been offering online learning opportunities even before the Covid-19 pandemic, enabling us to reach out to as many refugees as possible.
